Project Brief:
The Smart Biogas initiative focused on the co-development and deployment of IoT-enabled biogas meters to enable data monitoring, reporting, and verification (DMRV) in the biogas sector. By integrating digital innovations with renewable energy systems, the project enhances accountability, supports carbon financing, and promotes the adoption of intelligent energy management tools.
The Smart Biogas Meter Project enhances biogas adoption by integrating precise measurement, digital monitoring, and an innovative PAYGO financing model. It enables real-time tracking of gas production, flow, and consumption through IoT-connected meters that provide performance insights and maintenance alerts. The PAYGO system allows farmers to pay for biodigesters in manageable installments based on actual usage, with contributions recycled to support new beneficiaries. Implemented in Buikwe, Jinja, and Lwengo districts, the project trained farmer groups on biodigester use and bio slurry management, resulting in 27 biodigesters installed across diverse households, including women- and elderly-led ones. By improving soil fertility, reducing firewood dependence, and empowering local enterprises like ENERCOM and KASECO to adopt PAYGO models, the project advances clean energy access, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability.
